AK

We’ve reached the mid-point of the season. This is a good time to gauge how every team is doing. Some team are dramatically improved while AK has remained excellent. They are the only undefeated team left. But they’re not without warts either. They have the third scoring offense and third scoring defense. We are used to both those rankings being number 1. But we’re not going to quibble too much. 5-0 is 5-0. AK doesn’t seem as dominant as they have been the past two years, but maybe that’s by design. Mid-season grade: A+.

PRIME TIME

Prime Time is now qualitatively the second best team in the league, buoyed by the #1 scoring defense. And they’re pulling out wins while experiencing attendance issues. We can only imagine what they’re capable of when they can play with their full squad. Will the defense hold up at #1 at season’s end? We doubt it. Can they improve their O? No doubt about it. They need more seasoning together. Considering that this team was about to fold but was able to resurrect themselves on the fly speaks volumes about this team’s grit. We’re gonna hand these guys an A for expanding the pool of contenders this year.

BROWNS

The Browns pulled out a last second win over an apparent inferior foe. Their QB looks, frankly, old. He missed many throws and was blocked on multiple occasions. The Browns also played two different defensive sets each half. Yeah, we’re not sure either what they’re trying to do. Because these guys are three time defending champs, we’re gonna have to give them the benefit of the doubt. It’s hard to make sense of their of their rather pedestrian record. Are they on cruise control because it’s the regular season or is the empire starting its inevitable decline? We can’t tell right now so we’ll give these guys an A- simply because of their pedigree.

GATORS

The esteemed reader may be wondering why the Gators with a superior record than the Browns and a team they already whipped are ranked lower than them. Well it’s our power rankings and we put people where we want. Kidding. The Gators are ranked ever so slightly below the Browns due to the Gators being ranked lower on O and D than the Browns as well as an inferior point differential, a better predictor of future success. Anyway, the Gators have been good from day one, but they were never serious title contenders. Until this year. Their only loss was a close game to AK. Otherwise they’ve been dominant. We’re buyers of the Gators stock. Mid-season grade: A.

COBRA KAI

Cobra Kai wasn’t very good last season. We know we’re being kind when we say that. They were pretty bad. But that was last year. This year they fixed the most important position first – they now have a MVP caliber player manning that position. Second, they upgraded their talent base. They have among the very best rosters in the league. Third they added more bodies. Don’t overlook the importance of having enough bodies on the roster to cover for many deficiencies. Cobra Kai looks like legit contenders. From there they were to where they are is night and day. We give these guys an B+ for making the league that much better.

BANDITS

The Bandits are falling back to the middle of the pack a little bit. Speaking strictly by net points, this is basically a .500 team. And their schedule is about to get much tougher in the second half. The Bandits have always been resilient so their final record might be a moot point. But you still gotta keep winning games. Last year they started slow and finished very strong. This year they’ve started very strong. Will they finish strong this year? It’s probably a bad idea to bet against these guys. We’re going to give these guys a B just for having a better first half than they did a year ago.

SAVAGES

The Savages hung in there with the champs almost pulling off the upset of the year. This team started slow, but are slowly coming around. Their net points indicates that this is fundamentally closer to a .500 team. This Savages hasn’t fallen apart even after losing an all-star caliber QB. Their best player is also hasn’t played this season. They’re kind of just hanging around taking their punches. This team has displayed great grit and resiliency. We admire that. But we can’t over look the was and losses either. We’ll grade these guys on a slight curve and give them a B-. We expect this team to make its run in the second half.

THE ELITES

The Elites finally broke through with a win over the Thunder. The game was a little disjointed, but a win is a win. The Elites have unbelievable camaraderie. They also have a lot of talent. Why this collection of talent hasn’t materialized into more wins is anyone’s guess. What we do know is that when there is a long losing streak, perspective can be thrown to the curb. When that first win has materialized, a collective sign of relief ensues. The next step is to build on the ugly, yet welcome, win. The Elites don’t have much time left in the season to be still experimenting. By now they should have a clear idea of what works. The poor start is not sitting well with our grading system, but the resilience is. We give these a C+. They may not deserve such a high grade but we built in our bullish outlook into the curve.

RENEGADES

The Renegades couldn’t do much against PrimeTime and PrimeTime was missing many players. This is concerning to us. The Renegdes should’ve exposed an undermanned team. The Renegades themselves were an undermanned but they have added bdies to get to a double digit roster count. The Renegades roster is not an ideal mix, especially with so many new faces stunting chemistry. But they are lead by an all-star QB and a league veteran who should dig deep into his wealth of experience and knowledge and lead this team to a deep run in the playoffs. Body language on this team is not ideal. But these are correctable things. We’re gonna give these guys a C- because they are trying to mesh so many new faces on the fly.

THUNDER

The Thunder played a competitive game against the Elites whose outcome wasn’t decided until late in the game. This is progress. The Thunder have some very good pieces and they have a strong armed, mobile QB. They have a great foundation for future success. Unfortunately for them the league isn’t allowing the 10th place team into the playoffs. So it’s a pretty easy goal for the Thunder. They have to win two games, possibly three to get out of the ten spot. They have some games left they can easily win. We think they can pull it off. Because so many things haven’t gone their way especially their QB not showing up, they have a built in excuse for being the only team yet to taste victory. We’ll cut them some slack only for that reason for a mid-season grade of D+. It’ll be interesting to see how they respond.
